“Help run the nights, one small job at a time”
The crew has no staff, only people who took a job for a season. Here are the jobs we hope you might want.
Jobs last one season
Every volunteer job runs for a single season, and then you hand it over or take it again. That keeps the work light and means nobody feels trapped by a favour they offered in a good mood. Most volunteers spend one to two hours a week on the job, and you can always say that a season was enough.
You do not need to be an expert at anything. The people doing these jobs now mostly learned them on the spot, with a notebook from the previous holder and a moderator on call. If you would like to try a job for one night before agreeing to a season, say so and we will arrange a taster.
Where a hand is needed
Referee helper
Watches one fixture a week in spectator mode and writes a short note for Luke Davidson, who makes the final call. Good for people who enjoy rules and like to see a match from every angle. You will need a steady connection, a reasonable amount of patience and a willingness to write a clear note when a call is close.
Chat steward
Greets newcomers in the text channel and answers the first questions. The job takes about an hour a week, and Karen Jenkins gives a short briefing before your first shift. A friendly manner matters far more than knowing every answer.
Room opener
Unlocks the club room on the first Saturday, puts the urn on and counts chairs. Someone who likes tidy beginnings will be happy here. You will also be the first person to hear what the room sounds like on a good day.
Guides writer
Takes a genre or a mechanic you know well and explains it to a stranger in about 500 words, with a couple of pictures. Lynette Lawrence edits everything and will not let a sentence go out unless it is clear. Writing a first guide is a good way to learn a game properly.
